Some Dobbs Ferry residents may be wondering about the blue avenue banners at Ashford and Broadway with the words "Road to Freedom," a map of the eastern shore of the United States, and the date August 19, 1781. The avenue banners, sponsored by the Dobbs Ferry Historical Society, commemorate the start of the Continental Army's march to Virginia on that date. The march began in the area of the Ashford Avenue and Broadway intersection. Two months later, on Oct. 19, 1781, British General Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown to American and French forces. His surrender led to the uncontested independence of the United States. The annual Road to Freedom Walk that follows the path of the Continental Army will take place on Sunday, Oct. 17.
