I encourage everyone to listen to the June 24 episode of NPR’s “Fresh Air” with Terry Gross entitled “Uncovering Who Is Driving the Fight Against Critical Race Theory in Schools.” Despite the provocative title, it’s a good background on what CRT is and why it’s becoming a wedge issue in our communities.

If we are not careful, this could devolve into a fight of neighbor against neighbor here in our towns. Let’s not assume nefarious intent on the part of parents, administrators, and teachers. We all want the same thing — our students to be challenged and develop a healthy sense of self without being shamed or demeaned. The topic of racism can be taught in thoughtful ways without being divisive or hurtful. Will mistakes be made along the way? Definitely. But does that mean we shouldn’t try? No. Let’s give our administrators and teachers our support as they try to figure out ways to approach this tough topic.
