Robert Elliot Blau of Dobbs Ferry passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at age 73, after a 17-month battle with colon cancer.
Robert is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ronna, as well as daughters Laura (John) and Sarah, sister Marcia, and 8-week-old grandson Manoa.
Robert was born and raised in Washington Heights, the son of Joseph and Frances Blau. He graduated from Bronx High School of Science in 1963 and Cornell University 1967, where he also earned his Ph.D. in operations research and met his future wife.
Robert had multiple careers, including as a trader on the floor of the American Stock Exchange for 20 years, and subsequently returned to teaching as a lecturer at CUNY Baruch College until his retirement this year. He was an outspoken member of the Dobbs Ferry Board of Education for three terms.
Robert derived much joy and enrichment from being an active member of the local Jewish community. His natural teaching ability extended beyond the lecture hall and pervaded all aspects of his life. His keen mind and strategic thinking remained a hallmark of his essence. He met people and made friends wherever he went and was an avid bridge and chess player. He also enjoyed improvisational cooking, entertaining friends and family in his home, and attending New York Philharmonic concerts.
