Gloria M. Brkich of Hastings passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 22, at age 88.
Gloria was born in the Bronx, to the late Angelo and Mary (Mendillo) Dell’Armo, on July 25, 1932. She moved to Hastings in 1958, upon her marriage, and resided in the house she and her husband built until shortly before her passing.
In years past, Gloria led the local senior citizens group, the Busy Bees, and organized activities and trips for seniors for over 15 years, including an annual weeklong trip to Woodloch Pines in the Pocono Mountains, trips to Atlantic City, and weekly bingo games at the James Harmon Community Center. Gloria was also the senior liaison of the Hastings Parks and Recreation Commission. She stood up for seniors, and ensured that programs for them received funding.
Gloria received numerous awards for her dedication to seniors. On Jan. 27, 2017, she received the Super Senior Award during the Town of Greenburgh’s first Senior Honorees Program. She also received a certificate of recognition from State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins and a certificate of merit from the New York State Assembly.
On Sept. 20, 2018, upon her retirement from the Parks and Recreation Commission, Hastings Mayor Peter Swiderski and Village Manager Francis Frobel presented Gloria with a letter of appreciation. Commission members also thanked Gloria, who attended with her family.
Gloria is survived by her children — Douglas, Richard, Susan, and Deborah — as well as her sister Anna Dell’Armo Mauro and brother Salvatore Dell’Armo (Anne). She also leaves behind her grandchildren Alise, Alanna, and Austin, and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Rudolph, in 1998, as well as her parents and seven brothers and sisters.
