Elizabeth “Betty” Kiernan of Hastings passed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Nov. 3, at age 89, surrounded by her family members.
Betty was born in Hastings to George and Mary Kuepa Konkus Mark on Feb. 4, 1933. As one of seven children, Betty developed deep-rooted family values and a lifelong love for her siblings. Despite being the youngest child, Betty was resilient and never backed down when the need arose to defend her siblings.
Raised and educated in Hastings, Betty enjoyed roller skating and being a seamstress — making clothes for both herself and others, without patterns to guide the way. She also enjoyed refinishing furniture that her family passed down through generations.
Further, Betty was a devout Catholic who was a parishioner of both St. Anthony’s Church of Yonkers and St. Matthew Church of Hastings. In addition to attending weekly mass on Sundays, Betty volunteered countless hours tidying the church and arranging flowers around the altar.
Betty married George W. Kiernan in 1952 and remained wed to her husband until his passing in 2012. While married to George, Betty spent much of her time involved in her community as part of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hastings VFW.
Over her career, Betty developed her artistic eye. She spent over 50 years in the floral business in both administrative and floral design roles. While working at La Rochelle Florist, Betty became well known for her unique window displays. She blessed her community with her artistic talents until she opted to retire at age 75.
Later in her life, Betty prioritized saying her daily rosary and morning prayers. She became an avid reader and word search puzzler. Every night at 7:30, she watched “Wheel of Fortune,” and by the time the credits rolled, she had picked up the phone to remind her family, “I love you more.”
Betty is survived by her children — George Kiernan, Gregory (Charlene) Kiernan, and Mary Kiernan Steinitz — and her grandchildren — Alexandra, Victoria, and Charles Kiernan, and Brianna and Lauren Steinitz.
Visiting hours were Nov. 4 at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry. Mass of the Resurrection was Nov. 5 at St. Matthew in Hastings, followed by burial at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings.
In lieu of flowers, send donations in Betty’s memory to Regional Hospice, 30 Milestone Road, Danbury, CT 06810 (makingthebestofeveryday.org), where Betty received wonderful care as she closed her final chapter.
