Douglas H. Schading of Dobbs Ferry passed away on Sunday, Aug. 29, at age 73.
Born and raised in upstate Rochester, Douglas was the son of the late Jack and Ruth Schading. He had a longtime career with the State of New York, first in Buffalo, then in New Paltz, and eventually retired from SUNY Optometry in Manhattan.
Douglas enjoyed movies and theater. He treasured time with his daughter, Heidi, seeing more than 200 plays and musicals, most with her by his side. He adored hosting his friends and family in New York City and showing them the sights. His knowledge of the city earned him the comparison title of “Google Maps.” He also had a passion for traveling and was proud to fly more than 1 million miles on American Airlines. The flight attendants came to know him on domestic flights.
Douglas was an avid sports fan who always made sure to watch the New York Mets games. He especially cherished the Sundays he spent with his son, Ryan, watching the Buffalo Bills.
Douglas is survived by his former wife, Audrey; children Heidi (Chris), Libby, and Ryan (Isabel); and grandchildren Matthew, Alexis, Salvador, Jack, Ariana, and Marisa. He is also survived by his brothers, Jack (Merry) and Lee; nephews, Brett and Jack T.; and niece, Pamela.
Memorial services were held Sept. 7 at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry. In lieu of flowers, send memorial contributions to The Michael J. Fox Foundation or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
